![]() We get some phenomenal remakes here, like the original jungle theme and my personal favorite, stage 2 from Operation C. Think "Super Contra" or "Turtles in Time" and you "ReBirth"-idea, the music has been made to sound like it's coming out the sound chips of old Konami arcade cabinets. The music is mostly made up of old songs from different Contra games, which may be seen as lazy by some, but I rather like it myself. You obviously shouldn't be taking the story too seriously, just enjoy the wackyness. Isn't Bill supposed to meet this guy two millennia later? Mention working undercover dressed in drag! Even more bizarre is Jaguar Yagyu's very presence in the story. Why is Bill cryogenically frozen? Why is Lance working undercover? Not to Most of the time it doesn't really make much sense, or fails to deliver any explanations. ![]() Now, trying to make sense of this plot is something of a challenge. After each level you're treated to a nice cutscene which reveals more of the plot. There are 5 fairly brief stages plus a final boss "stage" if you're playing on either normal, hard Instead, the point is to go back to basics - just shoot and no questions asked.īeing a WiiWare title, you shouldn't expect this to be a huge game. If you're looking for a revolution in Contra gameplay, you're not going to find it here. That moves while making sure you don't die in the process. This game may perhaps be theĬontra ReBirth is part of Konami's line of "ReBirth" titles released for Nintendo Wii, joining the two other classic franchises Gradius and Castlevania. It's colorful, full of action and fun, and has a nice set of options (and unlimited continues!).Imagine, if you will, that Konami made another arcade game in the Contra series sometime in the early 90's. Of the Contra games I've played, Contra Rebirth is one of the best. Contra games are fun in general and there's nothing like mowing down hordes of enemies with the spread gun with a buddy fighting alongside you. WiiWare had some great games, and Contra Rebirth is definitely one of them, so much so that I would rank it at the top of my list of favorite WiiWare games. According to GameFAQs, in this mode "any enemy that you destroy will shoot a blue ring projectile in your direction, and the more enemies you kill, the more blue rings will spread all across the screen, which will make it harder to avoid the attacks." ![]() There are three difficulty levels to start with, and beating the hard mode unlocks "nightmare" mode, which has an interesting mechanic. The game only includes five stages, but on the normal difficulty it's still a decent challenge. There's no need for the Konami code since you can adjust the number of lives in the settings, and you get unlimited continues. I was thrown off by the fact you can't run and gun at the same time, although this isn't the first time a Contra game has gone with that design. ![]() Being able to hang from bars and climb up walls returns from previous games, and the game features a total of four playable characters (all play identically and two are unlockable) that will also be familiar to fans of the series. There are plenty of boss fights, and the first boss of the first game has another cameo in this game. All three games seem to have gotten a positive reception, and Contra Rebirth definitely feels like a great homage to a classic series.Ĭontra Rebirth has all the great over-the-top run 'n gun action of the original games, and Contra super fans will probably recognize more of the references to previous games than I did. I ended up skipping ahead and trying out Contra Rebirth, which was part of a trio of Konami releases on WiiWare that revisited classic franchises. I know I just said something similar in my last post, but I can't believe it's already been almost six and a half years since I've picked up a Contra game. ![]()
